The ten-to-six...and the rest of my life.
Hey, haven't posted anything related to or inspired by work in...like four or five days...which means that, hey, that time is up. ...a *particular* thing that sometimes makes working where I work and doing what I do so odd is that when a client calls asking for a law, court decision, or article from 1950 - or hell, for that matter, from *1850*, we can pull that item up in a few minutes. ...it's the court case from last year that's a problem. I mean, again, finding the thing online is easy enough (assuming you know where to start looking), but so far, at least for the purposes of laws and court cases, what is available online is generally/usually considered to be a fair to good representation of the 'real thing' that exists as printed text in a brochure or book, but still not entirely the 'real thing.' (...and our subscriptions *to* the books that would carry the text of the 'real thing' for U.S. and foreign court decisions have pretty much all stopped around five years ago.) --- Seven months in this apartment...and some things about it still manage to confuse me so. One thing in particular has to do with the entirely ridiculous number of power outlets I have in the living area - five sets of two, including a pair right next to each other. Except the thing is, two of the sets, on opposite walls, can be shut down by a standard wall light switch. Obviously, and especially since there is no ceiling light fixture or anything, those two are meant to have lamps plugged into them, so that you can then not have to bother with turning the lamps themselves on and off. The thing right now is that what one of the two has plugged into it is a power strip that then goes to my TV, cable box and PS2. And in the seven months, I've now had at least a couple of days when I accidentally did hit the master switch, or just leaned against it or something, turned the outlet off, and then wondered why the hell my cable box was dead. Well, and of course a) assumed it was probably something with the building that I would need to bother the super about...and b) was then too lazy to actually go and bother him. |

Came in to work this morning to see a huge pile of snow next to the parking garage. When plowing the top floor of the garage they simply dump the snow over the side. There was so much snow that it almost came up to the third level of the garage. I think the pile is about 24 feet high and is actually spilling over into the first floor of the garage so they had to block off about a dozen parking spaces. Right now we're taking bets on how long the pile will stick around for since that side of the parking garage is always in the shade. That and I was tempted to grab a tray from the cafeteria, walk to the third floor of the garage and slide down the snow hill. |

Greetings
I was waiting for heehaw_tng to come back before I sent out cards, but I completely forgot to ask who wanted them in the first place. Of course, they probably won't arrive until after Christmas, but whatever. I like cards, you like cards, right? Comments are screened. I'm sending out some cards tomorrow, so there's always a chance you might have already been on the list, but just in case... |

Yeah, still easily impressed. Especially by meat and cheese.
So I guess now 'South Park Slope' is pretty well established as a joke and a real estate marketing term only...and most people *still* have no idea where or what Windsor Terrace is. Which leads to an apartment ad that actually calls an area 'North Kensington.' I've been living in and around this part of Brooklyn - or coming back to this part of Brooklyn - for pretty much as long as I've been living *in this country.* This is the first time I've seen anything call a part of it 'North Kensington.' --- So, I come in to the office yesterday...and there is a big-ass gift basket sitting off on the side of my cubicle. Of course, my first reaction is to be somewhat confused as to where it came from, and then just wonder whether this is something the boss does for everyone. Turns out, no, this is just for me, and the thing is from one of our clients. And you know, walking into the office on a Monday morning, and being greeted with half a pound of pepperoni, plus cheese, plus oatmeal cookies, plus apples and oranges and stuff...really makes the whole day so much more cheerful and just genuinely pleasant! Gift basket! |

The aftermath.
The snowstorm did, in fact, set records. Officially, 21.1 inches fell at the airport. However, it stopped Saturday night, which meant that we got everything dug out and cleaned up on Sunday (with help from the neighbors), which meant that I'm here at work today. :/ Drive in wasn't too bad, although one of the onramps I use really needed to be cleaned up (or cleaned at all). It woudl have been nice if work had closed for the day, but since it's open I guess not having to take extra days off isn't so bad, as I'm going to be needing them in the future. Now, off to get a swine flu shot! Fun times. Current Mood: determined |

Thing I tried this weekend, and thing I haven't yet
In 'Things I tried': Dieu du Ciel 'Route des épices' peppercorn rye beer In 'Things I haven't yet': Flying Fish Brewing Company Bayshore Oyster Stout--- ...and, after five years of living in DC, and five more of coming back to DC what, like at least five times every year, place I've finally gone into for the first time - after walking by it dozens of times: The Fireplace...yes, it's *exactly* what it appears to be. |

Scenes from a Weekend
Went to my parents' house yesterday to pick up some stuff and hopefully attend a 5-year-old's birthday party; the party was cancelled and it ended up being too much crap to bring home in one trip anyway. Plus, my mother refused to let me go out last night, and it was warmer over there anyway, so I spent the night. I take two steps outside today and fall on my back. In our driveway. Funny enough, none of the bags I was carrying spilled out. So all that was hurt was my pride. Watched Harry Potter and Star Trek with them. Also stayed up watching Quinceañera which was fine, though for the first half hour or so I was wondering why it was on Logo of all places. And then, "Oh! I see." While I was watching the movie my phone kept ringing. The number was unknown and I heard music playing. At first I thought it was luminifer but then I realized it was Latin music, and eventually hung up. Then they called again. And again. And again. Today, they called again with "we called you last night with music." And I said it was probably a wrong number, and they said, "yes" and I hung up. |

Tree!
My tree is up. I think I'm going to forego the other apartment holiday decorations this year. (Yes, it means the singing mice and whatnot will return in 2010.) But I did get the lights and the purple glitter balls and the ornaments Grandma crocheted up. It looks festive. Also made about three dozen oatmeal-peanut-butter-butterscotch cookies earlier. Now out to dig Seth out of the snow before it all re-freezes tonight (and if I can get to the mailbox I'll put the outgoing stuff there too). Update, 6:02 P.M.: Shovel-gloving got nothin' on snow shovelling as a workout. Ow. However, this task was made significantly less onerous by my super, who was awesome and came with his buddy to help dig my car out of the snow. (Yes, even I who think that "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" really ought to be a Halloween carol anymore, can be grateful when my cynicism about the world is cracked a little.) Light time This year browse made a new peace wreath, a lot larger than the previous one. A child's hula hoop, lots of greenery and lights ... gorgeous! I get such a thrill each time I see it again, especially since leaving in the morning and coming home at night are both in full darkness right now. In this picture you can also see just the very edge of lights in the window of the office. He hung lights in all the visible windows and also put up a garland inside where we have a few ornaments. I *love* xmas lights so this decorating was a really wonderful early present to me. My feelings regarding xmas are all over the place historically but this year it feels good to be not so much bah-humbuggy. The things I dislike about the season haven't changed but I'm getting better at ignoring them, better at seeking out the things I DO want out of this time of year. Time with loved ones, good food, snuggling, sleeping in, singing carols, lights, lights, lights. Happy return to the light, northern hemisphere! |

Snow Day!
The snow is up to the bench seats in the courtyard and they're telling federal workers to check with OPM for work Monday. The Metro is completely shut down above ground -- including the buses -- and one of my friends in retail just pinged me to say the store was closed as of 1 PM. Yep, definitely baking today. Not going anywhere! (To anyone who really, really, really needs to be out today -- BE CAREFUL, PLEASE!) Current Mood: awake |

Oh, the weather outside is frightful....
Tonight after a 20 minute drive took over an hour, I did get to enjoy the silent, eerie light that happens when streetlamps reflect off the snow. The effect is marvelous, and moreso when you don't have anywhere you really must be the next morning (we're supposed to get anywhere from 5" to 18", depending on who you talk to, before this finishes up tomorrow night; I have a date with my oven to make meringues because they seemed interesting, oatmeal-peanut-butter-butterscotch cookies because I can, and orange-cinnamon cookies because I wanted to experiment with baking sweet things with alternative flours). Thoughts of possibly going to the farmer's market and touring an apiary on Sunday have been put on hold, the first until the weather cooperates more and I'm in the area and the second until it's offered again, hopefully minus the snow (although my objection is more to the 30 mile drive to a place I'm unfamiliar with in the snow; novelty is only worth so much to me in this case). But before I don my sweats and go play kitchen witch, I should head for bed and sleep off the week (been long) and head for the oven refreshed (or at least not dead-on-my-feet exhausted). As pretty as the scene outside is, a soft warm bed with the flannel sheets pulled out tonight is infinitely more appealing. Current Mood: tired |

Hate winter.
SNOW. In potentially vast quantities. (Well, vast for Maryland. You Midwesterners are probably laughing at it. Although I'm thinking that once you get up to a foot, even they start to blink a little.) As lirazel often says, it's not the snow so much as having to be an adult in snow, which means that you can't just hunker up somewhere until it all goes away. And around here, it happens just often enough to be a major problem but not often enough that people learn how to deal with it. (And even if it did happen more often, I'm not sure people would learn anyway. People can't seem to figure out how to drive in the freakin' rain, and it rains a lot around here.) It is entirely possible that I could be holed up until Monday, and I'm not looking forward to having to deal with travel and digging things out. Wasn't planning on missing work Monday and kinda need to not in order to make vacation/sick time work out properly. We'll see. Why couldn't this have happened last weekend? I didn't have that many plans last weekend. Edit: I plan to walk to and from the Metro in a dress and hiking boots. Eccentricity means never having to apologize for sensible footwear. Current Mood: worried |

Words of years past
"I would make the argument that at one point, especially during the bubble, the AnimeOnDVD forums were almost monolithic in the representation of 'this is anime fandom', 'anime fandom exists in this space, this is where you can interact with them'" - Zac Bertschy |

Reflections on things.
Listening to a podcast for the first ever time (yeah, I'm *that* behind the times), I'm actually really tempted to call the two people *in* the podcast (both of whom are if not quite friends, then certainly acquaintances/past colleagues) and argue with them. This is why I should generally not listen to podcasts. |
